Which outdoor fabric actually lasts on the Costa Blanca?

Outdoor fabric on the Costa Blanca has a hard life. The same sun that makes the terrace lovely is quietly bleaching everything on it, and the sea air does the rest. The fabric that looks perfect in a shop in April can be tired and patchy by September. So before you spend money on covers or outdoor cushions, it is worth understanding what you are actually up against.

What to look for

The short answer is solution-dyed acrylic. In ordinary printed fabric, the colour sits on the surface, so when the sun wears that surface away, the colour goes with it. In solution-dyed acrylic the colour is added while the fibre itself is being made, so it runs all the way through. Scratch it, sand it, leave it in the sun, and the colour is still there because it is the fibre, not a coating.

That is why it holds its colour for years outdoors while printed fabric fades in a season. It also sheds water rather than soaking it up, dries quickly, and copes with salt far better. It costs more than a basic cotton or a printed outdoor-look fabric, and it is worth every cent for anything that lives outside.

The mistake people make

The common mistake is buying on looks and price alone, usually a printed "outdoor" fabric that photographs beautifully. It performs for one summer, then fades unevenly, and the covers that cost a little less end up costing more because you replace them. Buying once, properly, is almost always cheaper than buying twice.

Keeping it looking good

Good fabric still likes a little care. Brush off salt and dust now and then, hose covers down and let them dry fully before storing, and bring cushions in over winter if you can. None of it is hard, and it adds years.
